The acute shortage of water in the most water yielding months of the year is a sequel to the plunder on natural resources. Hyderabad, city of lakes supported by big reservoirs and a confluence of Krishna and Godavari basins is today craving for water. The concrete jungle in the central business district along with urban sprawl have led to a situation where there is very little possibility in many areas for percolation of rain water into the ground. Windling water resources emptied aqueous are an indication for the amount of pressure that we have generated on the ground water resources. More than half of the city’s water consumption is from the ground. With only half of the tapped ground water actually being replenished by the natural means every year. This grave situation has forced Planners, Activists, Government and Administrators to think for alternates.
Ground water recharge through diversion of roof top rainwater is seen
as a solution for the plethora of water scarcity problems. Initially the focus was on large open spaces
in institutions and industries. Water
retention structures whether checkdams or rockfill dams have been erected in
all large institutional areas in the past three years across the city.
Inspite of these efforts if large tracts of built up area are not
touched then it becomes very very difficult to recharge the ground under this
area. It is in this context that we
have drafted a strategy of focussing and targeting all high schools in and
around the city. Only open space
available is in and around the schools.
If only these schools attempt and adopt water harvesting, we can also
address the issue of flooding and consequent storm water drain problems in the
city. The schools are harbingers of
change. They initiate change and they
inculcate habits. The teachers in this
schools are role models and effective communicators. Their role in developing water conservation habits among school
children is tremendous. Keeping this in
view the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board readily accepted the
proposal of the National Green Corps for conducting Teacher Training programmes
on Water Harvesting. Not only the
decision but also a decisive action followed it. With this support of Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage
Board, the National Green Corps had gone in to conduct intensive Teacher
Training programmes in all educational mandals of Hyderabad and Rangareddy
districts. While in Hyderabad out of
the 13 mandals covered, 631 schools have participated and in Rangareddy, the 13
training programmes were attended by 283 teachers.
The District Educational Officers of these two districts were contacted
and proceedings were raised on conducting the Teacher Training programmes at 13
locations in Rangareddy districts and 13 locations in Hyderabad district. The support of Deputy Educational Officers
was extensively taken for initiating this training programme and also for
inaugurating this programme at every location.
The participation of officials from Education Department has provided
the necessary boost. The team from
Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board was present for any suggestions
and support during the training programme.
All these training programme were conducted in centrally located
schools. The teachers were provided
with resource material on all environmental issues while focussing on water and
its conservation. Apart from this the
resource material supplied by Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board
was extensively utilised.
The films made by Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board and
AP Pollution Control Board on Water Conservation were projected through LCD
systems as part of the training programme.
Whole issue of water from its generation point to the destination was
dealt as part of the training programme.
The need for water conservation, qualities and quantities of water
available provided the frame of reference.
The various water collection systems i.e., roof top collection, lintel
level collection, ground level collection and sump level collection were dealt
in detail.
The filtration systems and Water harvesting structures were also
covered in detail. The queries of the
participants on the technical support extended and the Water. Land and Tree Act
were also addressed. It is expected
that atleast hundred schools go in for Water Harvesting Structures before the
15th of August. A follow-up
action is being taken in this regard.
It was also announced during the training programme that all schools
which complete RainWater Harvesting before 15th of August will be
awarded. It was also announced that
those school students who complete Rain water harvesting at home will also be
awarded if they complete by 26th of January.
